Return of "Zoom" Service in Syria After U.S. Restrictions Lifted

The Syrian Minister of Communications and Technology, Abdul Silam Haikal, announced the return of the "Zoom" communication platform to Syria, after it had been banned in the country since the start of U.S. sanctions on the Syrian tech sector in 2011. The minister explained in a post on the "X" platform (formerly Twitter) that the decision to permit the use of the platform came after intensive efforts and careful monitoring of the U.S. restrictions on tech services in Syria — restrictions that had hindered access to many global technologies and services relied upon by citizens and institutions alike.
Abdul Silam Haikal pointed out that lifting restrictions on "Zoom" is part of the Syrian government’s efforts to enhance the digital sector and facilitate online communication, especially given the increasing need for digital communication tools under current circumstances. He thanked the ministry team responsible for tracking and overcoming technical obstacles, as well as the Syrian tech community residing in the United States and abroad, who contributed effectively to achieving this milestone through their efforts and continuous calls to lift restrictions on digital services.
"Zoom" was among many tech services that were either banned or restricted in Syria due to the economic and political sanctions imposed on the country. These restrictions limited virtual communication and hindered educational, training, and remote work activities. With the lifting of the "Zoom" ban, significant improvements in communication means are expected for educational institutions, companies, non-governmental organizations, and individuals.
As Syria moves toward improving its information and communication technology environment, this step is likely to facilitate relations and remote work, enhance connectivity with the outside world, and ease Syria’s participation in global digital and technological initiatives. There remains hope that the Syrian government will continue to make positive strides in integrating technology into various sectors of life, thereby boosting economic and social development in the country.
